familial consequences following deconversion: perceived parental openness, intrinsic religiosity, and impact of familial repair https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/psy_graduate/3 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/psy_graduate/3 thu, 03 oct 2024 13:35:04 pdt previous research on deconversion from a christian religious background to atheism indicates that individuals experience negative social consequences with family, friends, and community groups when they disclose that their beliefs have changed (marriott, 2015); (dollinger, 2018). past research has shown that mothers are impacted by their emerging adult child’s deconversion (marriott, 2015). studies also indicate that parents who are extrinsically religious and less open to new experiences are more likely to dismiss their emerging adult child’s worldview (marriott, 2015). these findings are all derived from qualitative research, and there is no known quantitative research investigating these topics. this study contributes to existing research by using a quantitative method to determine if perceived parental openness and religiosity predicts the severity of coming out responses and frequency of reconversion attempts made by family members in differing gender roles. eighty- seven participants were recruited from subreddits that support the non-religious community. asked demographic questions, screened for depression using the phq-9, asked questions about their anxiety using the gad-7, then responded to the openness scale of the big five inventory and the i/e-revised scale regarding how they perceive each parent by gender role. data was analyzed by using correlations and stepwise logistic regression. this research determined that perceived female parental openness may be a predictor of severity of responses when coming out to parental figures.

community, conflict, and confidence tricks: documenting the history of the nashville christian institute 1942-1967 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/beaman_fac/1 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/beaman_fac/1 tue, 01 oct 2024 12:43:07 pdt when the nashville christian institute, an african-american church of christ k-12 school, closed its doors in 1967, lipscomb’s library inherited the school’s documents. in the spring of 2024, beaman library decided to publish these documents in our carolyn wilson digital collections. before publishing them, we asked graduates of the school for help with identifying and labeling photos and other significant items. thanks to the nci community’s efforts, beaman library is now able to present a comprehensive online collection of photos, letters, board meeting minutes, and other documents that tell the history of the school at a pivotal moment in u.s. history as both the nation and the church grappled with issues of racial segregation and integration. former nci students have also contributed personal recollections of their experiences at nci. the documents shed light on the lawsuit legendary civil rights lawyer fred gray filed against lipscomb, the racial history of churches of christ in nashville, and the nci board’s dealings with the infamous con man billie sol estes.

age. cultural intelligence, social media use and anxiety https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/psy_graduate/2 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/psy_graduate/2 mon, 30 sep 2024 14:04:54 pdt this study investigated the intricate relationship between social media use, age, cultural intelligence, and anxiety levels, aiming to unravel potential interactions and influences across diverse demographics. in a survey-based approach, 49 participants from various age groups and cultural backgrounds were tested for age, cultural intelligence scores (cqs), anxiety levels (gad-7), and social media use patterns assessed by the social networking time use scale (sontus). the central hypothesis posited that age, cultural intelligence, and social media use collectively interact in predicting anxiety levels. to address this, a multiple linear regression analysis was employed, examining the complex relationships among social media use, age, and cultural intelligence to understand their combined influence on anxiety levels. this research contributes valuable insights into the nuanced dynamics of social media's impact on mental health, offering implications for both research and practical interventions. understanding the interplay between age, cultural intelligence, and social media use in this context enhances our comprehension of factors influencing anxiety experiences in the digital age.

an evaluative assessment of leadership retreat as a spiritually formative experience for leaders of campus churches affiliated with the churches of christ in ghana https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/dmin_project/15 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/dmin_project/15 wed, 04 sep 2024 12:50:08 pdt the churches of christ in ghana are a mission plant. they were planted by two american missionaries, wendell broom and sewell hall, around 1958. the churches of christ in ghana pursue a theology of ministry which resolves around evangelism, edification, and benevolence. these are often referred to as the “mission of the church.” they represent the holy trinity of activities which was once and for all time delivered to the church in ghana. against these, there must be no rival theological focus. any innovation beyond this risks the heresy or apostasy label which is punishable by ostracism. the general assumption among churches of christ asserts that the appropriation of biblical knowledge by itself will result in spiritual maturity.

after years of pursuing this theology of ministry, its deficiencies have become apparent. the emphasis on information and facts from scripture does not seem to be producing commensurate levels of spiritual maturity and transformation. leaders and members are still captive to self, sin, and society. conformity to the image of christ is still elusive. therefore, leaders of campus churches affiliated with churches of christ in ghana became aware of this spiritual stagnation experienced by members of the church, we resorted to retreats as viable alternatives to encourage pursuit of spiritual formation and transformation. this has been going on for more than a decade.

this study evaluates these retreats as spiritually formative experiences for the participants who are mostly emerging adult christians. the study also seeks to advocate a review of theological vision and telos of ministry. almost all participants in the retreat discussed in this study indicated that they have experienced some positive spiritual shifts related to their retreat experiences. they described the retreats as “educative and transformative.”

protecting american children: a social-ecological analysis of pactp4 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/sws_student/1 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/sws_student/1 mon, 26 aug 2024 12:25:03 pdt the quantity of pesticides used annually in the united states exceeds one billion pounds every year, and the amount is only rising. the current law that governs the use of pesticides—the federal insecticide, fungicide and rodenticide act (fifra), permits the use of 72 known pesticides that have been proven harmful and are banned in other countries. research links the usage of pesticides to the health of individuals, families, and whole communities within the environment. moreover, dangerous pesticides have been shown to disproportionately affect children, agricultural workers, people of color, and low-income communities. despite the mounting evidence that confirms the adverse health effects from these substances, fifra’s most updated amendment was nearly 20 years ago. to correct this injustice, passage of the protect america’s children from toxic pesticides act (pactpa) is paramount. this act would specifically ban the use of organophosphate insecticides, neonicotinoid insecticides and paraquat herbicides and close loopholes that allow the environmental protection agency to approve pesticides before they are properly tested. utilizing a social-ecological framework, this poster will present the literature related to the use of pesticides and the impact on health status, explore the vulnerability of at-risk groups, and present a detailed analysis of current and future policy initiatives to advance environmental justice.

a matter of life and death: the conceptualization and theological significance of blood in the pentateuch https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/hst_master/1 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/hst_master/1 mon, 19 aug 2024 13:05:04 pdt this master of theological studies thesis analyzes the conceptualization and theological significance of blood within the pentateuch. while the thesis does attend to various anthropological concerns (i.e., the sociocultural understandings of blood that inform the text), it is more chiefly concerned with how such understandings of blood contribute to the broader theology of the pentateuch. using a canonical interpretive approach that respects both the diachronic nature of the text and the theological unity intended by its final redactors, the thesis primarily explores the two principal contexts in which blood appears in the pentateuch: israel’s cultus and instances of bloodshed. because of the complexity of the sacrificial system and the centrality of blood within it, the cultus is accorded an exceptional degree of attention.

chapter 1 introduces the thesis topic, clarifies the goals of the study, and describes the general methodological approach of the study. chapter 2 provides an introduction to the priestly system and a methodology for interpreting cultic rituals. this information is then used to determine the meaning of sacrifice, blood manipulation, and atonement in the pentateuch. chapter 3 considers the nature of bloodshed in light of creation theology, and examines the theological implications of the various homicide and asylum laws given throughout the pentateuch. chapter 4 offers a summative review and provides practical theological application.
